Big boys get slapped

2010-Jun-24, 11:19

Hedge fund giant Moore Capital Management, LP and affiliates Moore Capital Advisors, LLC and Moore Advisors, Ltd., were ordered to pay a $25 million penalty in a settlement of attempted manipulation charges brought by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) related to trades in fake rolex Nymex platinum and palladium contracts in 2007 and 2008.

In addition to the monetary penalty, the CFTC order restricts Moore and its affiliates' registrations and places a two-year restriction on trading within 15 minutes of the close of the platinum and palladium futures and options markets.

The order charged that a former Moore portfolio manager attempted to manipulate the settlement prices of platinum and palladium futures contracts traded on Nymex by engaging in a practice known as "banging the close."

The order recognizes Moore Capital's cooperation with the CFTC during the investigation. Moore stated, "Neither Moore Capital's principals nor its current management were involved in any improper trading, and none have been accused of any wrongdoing. We are committed to high standards of integrity in our business practices and have worked diligently to reach a settlement with the CFTC."

The fraud charges leveled against Goldman Sachs by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in April devolved into a melodrama with Goldman representing the greed and excess of Wall Street during Congressional hearings.

Goldman stated that the charges are unfounded in law and fact and noted in its defense that it had long exposure to the CDO, extensive disclosure was provided and that it never represented to its largest investor that Paulson was going to be a long investor.

"I wanted to challenge myself and when I saw this trek to Peru I knew it was the perfect option.

"It's because of the research being funded by charities like Breast Cancer Campaign that more women are now surviving breast cancer, so hopefully my contribution will go some way to helping them continue their worthwhile work."

The 50-year-old will begin her 10-day challenge on October 22, during Men T-Shirts Clothing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in the ancient city of Cusco.

From there she will then trek across the multi-terrain of Lares Valley trail until she reaches the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu - one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

MACHU Picchu is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

It is a pre-Columbian Inca site, which is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley, in Peru. It is believed that the initial residents of Machu Picchu died within 100 years of its establishment, due to smallpox.

Store's bid for new post offic

2010-Jun-23, 11:26

PATCHWAY is one step closer to getting a new post office.

The Spar shop in Rodway Road has applied for planning permission to extend the shop and make changes to include post office services on site.

Patchway has been without a branch since August 2009, when its post office shut down.

The Coniston Road branch had been run by supermarket chain the Co- operative but when the shop closed it led to the end of the post office too.

Since its closure, Royal Mail says it has been looking for another shop to provide post office services for Patchway.

In January, the Evening Post reported that Royal Mail was looking at several options for a post office in the town, and was close to securing a venue. At the moment the nearest post offices are in Filton or Little Stoke.

Patchway mayor Lew Gray has previously said a long-term option for the post office could be for it to be included in the "children's hub" being built on the site of the Britannia pub in Rodway Road, but that was not due to open until the end of 2011.

Maia Riley, marketing manager of Capper & Co, which owns Spar shops in Bristol, said: "Capper & Co has already applied for planning permission for a small extension and changes to the store, which are required to house the post office. In the meantime, we are proceeding with drawing up plans and have spoken to the Post Office, who have been positive, and we now only need to hear from the planning department.

"It's hard to estimate how long the permission will take or indeed how long the changes will take before the plans are drawn, but we want this to happen as soon as possible. "Post offices have always formed a vital role in the community and it is important to Spar to ensure the people of Patchway have this heart of the area restored."

Royal Mail spokesman Sue Dakin said: "We have been in discussion with Spar about the possibility of the business taking over the running of a local post office and we are encouraged by any news that they may be seeking planning permission to accommodate our services on their site. At this stage though we have not received any formal application from Spar to run the post office service and the vacancy remains open to all interested parties."

'Just-In-Time Hiring' Good New

2010-Jun-22, 11:44

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., June 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Because companies and organizations are making more "just-in-time" hiring decisions, the summer hiring season looks brighter for new college graduates who are still looking for a job.

Instead of hiring for what they think they will need in the future, employers are hiring more for what they need right now, says Ladd Flock, Director of Career Services at Wake Forest University. That means two things for job-seekers: they need to keep in close touch with their college career centers this summer to be aware of new openings and they need to respond immediately when a job is posted.

More hiring is likely to take place Hats Clothing

Hiring is up 5.3 percent nationally for the Class of 2010, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, and hiring is not over for the year. A steady flow of job listings keeps coming into Wake Forest's Office of Career Services. "We're still getting phone calls and emails from companies that have job postings right now," Flock says.

Flock provides five tips for new college graduates job-hunting in the summer months:

1. Apply quickly. If your university provides an online service with updated job postings, check them every day. Many employers are giving job candidates only a few days to submit an application.

2. Update contact information with your university's career services office. Make sure the career services staff can reach you with a job lead that matches up with your skills and interests.

3. Polish your resume and update details that may have changed since graduation.

4. Find out what services your university's career office offers to graduates. Just because you have graduated does not mean they cannot help you.

5. Connect immediately with your university's alumni clubs in the cities where you might like to work. Alumni are a wonderful resource for new graduates and often open doors to help a new graduate get an interview or a job.

STEVE JONES, AGED 44, IS A JOINER WHO LIVES IN JAMES BRINDLEY CLOSE, ETRURIA.

The day of Dayna's birth was one of the best days of my life.

'I was only 18 and living in Sydney with her mother Robyn. We had a place in Manly, God's country, where we would wake up each morning to see the waves crashing at the shore.

I'd met Robyn while on a 12-month contract as a joiner. She was pregnant by the time my working visa expired and I ended up staying an extra two years so I could be there for Dayna's birth. She was a fantastic baby - as good as gold and a real daddy's girl. But one day I woke up to a loud knocking on the door.

I was whisked off by the police and taken to a displaced person camp with around 2,000 Vietnamese boat people. Not long after, I was on a plane back to England.

Robyn and gordons New Jewelrys stores Dayna came to live with me for a while but things didn't work out. The last time I saw Dayna she was 18-months-old and was in a taxi to the airport with her mother.

We kept in touch for several months, but we both started other relationships. Eventually, all the contact stopped.

Dayna never left my mind. I'd think about her every day. I wondered if she had brothers or sisters, if she'd got married or if she was still living in Australia at all. I wanted to try to find her but I didn't know where to start.

I'm computer illiterate, but in January this year, my friend went on Facebook and I asked him to have a look for my daughter. I thought the best bet was to try to find her mother, which we did and amazingly found Dayna.

I couldn't believe when she had named me as her father on her page and said that coming to England and meeting me would be a dream come true. Now we speak every day on Facebook and a couple of times on the telephone. Shortly after we got back in touch I had Dayna's name and her birthday tattooed on my arm. The whole beauty of it is that my two other children Erin, aged 18, and Grant, aged 17, get on with Dayna really well.

I think Dayna thought they might not have known about her because she was a bit of a dirty secret, but they have been brought up knowing that they had a sister. When they found out I'd managed to track Dayna down it was a dream come true for them as well.

She is the most amazing person in the world.

She is straight and honest.

'I'd been looking for my dad since I was 11-years-old. My mother had told me about him, but only a few details and I treasured lots of old photographs of us together when I was a baby.

I'd done everything to try to find my father. I'd tried the Salvation Army as well as getting some of my friends in the UK to look. But because Jones is such a popular name, it was very difficult.

I set up a page on the website Facebook and got my mother to join as I thought it would give me more of a chance of finding him. In my personal information, I named my father and said that my one dream was to travel to England and meet him. I posted old photographs in the hope that someone would recognise them.

When I saw my father's message, it was like a dream come true. My moth

About 15,000 of them buzzed the posh Cipriani Wall Street restaurant this week, blanketing an elegant front door and forcing police to cordon off the block.

"We had 15,000 girls who wanted to get in and have a nice, fresh Bellini on a hot, sunny day," general manager Eric Bonnetain joked Tuesday.

Lisbon wins award for downtown

1970-Jan-1, 12:00

AUGUSTA ? Norway and Lisbon were recognized for excellence in downtown revitalization at a statewide historic preservation conference in Augusta this week.

Lisbon was honored with the first Downtown Achievement Award for an Outstanding Maine Downtown Network Community. Lisbon, Norway and Farmington were three of seven towns eligible for the award because they were named last year as the original Maine downtown network communities.

About 200 people from as far away as Presque Isle and the southern end of Maine came to Augusta on Thursday and Friday for the conference which was held in several downtown historic buildings such as Masonic Hall and and the Flatiron Building that have not been accessible to the public or have been closed for public use for many years.

Attendees, who ranged from historic preservationists to town officials and developers, had their choice of 23 workshops where they learned how to boost business on Main Street, how to "brand" a community, create display windows and finance historic rehabilitation projects. They also learned how rehabilitating historic buildings is critical to downtown revitalization and neighborhood improvement strategies, and about the new statewide building and energy codes that were adopted on June 1.

As part of the new program launched last year by Maine Development Foundation's Downtown Center, Lisbon was recognized for using the Maine Downtown Network Community program to engage and organize community leaders into committees that surveyed local residents and businesses on a wide variety of issues such as housing, agriculture and economic development. The information was used to create work plans that have been presented to the Town Council for review and direction.

In presenting the award to Town Councilor Gina Mason and fellow Downtown Revitalization Committee members Brenda Rogers and Amy Cunningham and Rosie Bradley, economic and community development director, Jon Edgerton, co-chairman of the Main Downtown Center's Advisory Council, said "Lisbon ? and specifically Lisbon Falls ? has strengthened their volunteer base to begin fundraising efforts and is forming a nonprofit to better position them to apply for full Main Street Maine designation in the future."

The program works with towns to explore the Main Street approach to downtown revitalization.

In other awards, Norway Downtown President Andrea Burns and board member Brenda Melhus were honored with the Downtown Achievement Award for Outstanding Image Campaign for the creation of nine banners that were designed by Melhus and based on Norway's map and directory. The design includes historic and current photographs. The banners welcome Main Street pedestrians and motorists Chopard Jewelry Replica Watch to Norway's downtown historic district. It was the second year the town has been honored with the award.

Aranka Matolcsy, director emeritus of Western Maine Art Group, won the Downtown Achievement Award for Outstanding Window Display for the monthly-themed exhibits in 12 large windows of the Norway Savings Bank Operation Center on Main Street. The display celebrates the work of artists and artisans and is lit up at night.

The village of Lisbon Falls earned the Downtown Achievement Award for Outstanding Public/Private Partnership, which went to Maurice Bonneau's Sausage Kitchen on Main Street in Lisbon Falls. Bonneau took an empty Main Street building ? the old post office ? to create manufacturing jobs and retail space.
